"Over the last five years Icelandic investors and banks have becoming an increasingly powerful force in the UK economy, buying up High Street names from House of Fraser to Hamleys as well as setting up popular internet savings banks:
Icesave and Kaupthing Edge.
An estimated 150,000 British savers have deposits in these two banks.
However, analysts warned that the Iceland financial miracle had fully unravelled as Glitnir, the country's third largest bank, was nationalised after its short-term funding dried up.
[...]
The other two major investment banks, Kaupthing and Landsbanki, immediately issued statements to reassure their customers about their financial soundness.
However, experts warned that the Icelandic economy, which in recent years witnessed miracle growth was now suffering badly – a situation that could have a profound effect on British consumers."
